Not the most original destination, but we’ve had a great week away in Cornwall!

We decided to spend some time in the South West of the county, a few miles outside Penzance. From Okehampton it’s less than two hours to the furthest point in Cornwall, so doable in a day, but it was nice to spend some time exploring without all the travelling.

On the way down we stopped off at Perranporth beach, a favourite of ours and one I remember from my childhood. It never disappoints!

We visited Porthleven, the home town of a friend from Tring which we really enjoyed, especially when we had the little beach all to ourselves for a while!

Hayle is somewhere neither of us have been before. I decided to have a day off of the diet and treat myself to some Cornish classics. A delicious pasty courtesy of Philps (you can order them online, help!), and a massive tub of ice cream from Mr B’s (ferrero rocher and snickers flavours in case you were wondering!) provided perfectly.

Hayle is well known for its gorgeous sandy beaches, but we struggled for a while to find a dog friendly one. In the end, Porth Kidney beach delivered. Bit of a faff to get to but huge, clean and not at all busy.

Our 6th wedding anniversary was on 5th June. I’d pre-booked tickets to the famous Minack Theatre, not considering that it rained on our wedding day, and has often rained on our anniversary! The rain jinx prevailed all day, but thank goodness it more or less gave it up for the superb performance of Hamlet.

Pendeen is somewhere we’ve stayed before, so we paid a visit to a cheeky little bay we know. The views are outstanding and you can often see seals. A little way along is Sennen where we had some lunch before walking along the coastal path towards Lands End. It’s a great way to get to Lands End, should you wish to, but even in June it’s so heaving with tourists that we turned back before we got there! Called in to the Tinners Arms, another favourite in Zennor, the tiny birds in the pub garden are amongst the bravest and boldest I’ve ever seen, and super cute.

On previous trips, we’ve really enjoyed Sennen beach, but it’s not dog friendly so this time we headed a little further along to the hidden gem that is Gwenver beach. It’s a bit of a climb down but so worth it. As you can see from this picture, it’s a stunning beach and our day was made when a pod (yes I had to look that up!) of dolphins spent half an hour or so playing and jumping in the surf right in front of us.

The Royal Cornwall show was next on the list and what a county show it is. Possibly too big, we didn’t get round it all by any stretch, but there was loads to see and do. One of the highlights was the RNLI stand, but I’ll do a separate post on that as there’s an important message to get across.

Finally we spent the afternoon on Looe, and arrived shortly before their annual Raft Race. The town was heaving, everyone was friendly and there was a proper carnival atmosphere – great fun.
